Jim’s
Australiana Spot – 2UE - October 23, 2011
George and Paul being on holiday... Jim was on air with fellow racing enthusiast, Stewart Bocking.
Naming racehorses has become something of an art form over the years, owners take it very seriously, looking to bring a smile to the face of those spotting it in the form guide. Other names are so obvious and boring that it doesn't much matter to the owners.
Q |
Le Philou was a sire of stayers - his name means 'pickpocket' in French - can anyone tell us which two of his offspring won a Melbourne Cup and which one won a Metropolitan Handicap? |
Very cryptic names are fun - think about these ....
• Railings was out of a mare called Suffragette.... Suffragette's chained themselves to railings at 10 Downing St.
• Mouawad who was out of Eight Carat and the Mouawad family are the biggest jewel traders in the Middle East.
• Recalcitrance who was out of a mare named Miss Keating was named in honour of Paul Keating's diplomatic gaffe in calling the Malaysian PM 'relcalcitrant'.
SOME FAVOURITES of Jim's and Stewart's
• Makybe Diva - the girls who work in the owner's office: Marie, Kylie, Belinda, Diane, and Vanessa.
• There's a chestnut with 3 white feet racing in Victoria called 'Who Stole My Sock'
• Most Husbands is from a mare named No Say
• Then there was Hoof Hearted - a race caller's nightmare - and Merkin, which had to be changed as a merkin is a pubic wig!
