  IT's SUMMER AND SHARK SEASON!

Great White Shark

Last week we looked at the facts about the KOALA ... today it's the other end of the food chain .... GREAT WHITES!

Q
When does a Port Jackson shark 'go for a spin'?
A
When it's laying an egg! Port Jacksons lay spiral shaped eggs into crevices
Q
Mammals have 5 senses - how many do sharks have and what are they?
A
6 - sight hearing touch smell taste and electro-receptivity ... they sense the magnetic field of the earyn and other living creatures - arguably they have 7 senses as the have the lateral line vibration sensor which many fish have.
Q
Great Whites do TWO things no other sharks do ... both add to their menacing image ... what are they?
A
Swim with their heads OUT of the water and they also breach while hunting - coming right out of the water

A Great White accidentally breached into a research boat off South Africa!

GREAT WHITE FACTS:

• Great Whites live 40 years ... mature at 14 ... hunt fish until mature ..then mammals ... up to 15 are born live and 5 ft long in one litter.
• Nicole, a tagged Great White, swam 11 000 kms from South Africa to Australia - stayed 99 days and swam back again.
• Great Whites can use up to 30 000 teeth in their life.
• They are the ultimate hunting machine ... perfectly camouflages - white underneath and grey on top - have 7 senses to hunt with and can swim at 40 km an hour.

We ran out of time on this topic and will revisit SHARKS in next few weeks.

Great White Shark
A treacherous monster is the Shark
He never makes the least remark.

And when he sees you on the sand,
He doesn't seem to want to land.

He watches you take off your clothes,
And not the least excitement shows.

His eyes do not grow bright or roll,
He has astonishing self-control.

He waits till you are quite undressed,
And seems to take no interest.

And when towards the sea you leap,
He looks as if he were asleep.

But when you once get in his range,
His whole demeanour seems to change.

He throws his body right about,
And his true character comes out.

It's no use crying or appealing,
He seems to lose all decent feeling.

After this warning you will wish
To keep clear of this treacherous fish.

His back is black, his stomach white,
He has a very dangerous bite
